Tips to avoiding an injury
Looking back, time has really flown. I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for 12 years now. I’ve been able to connect with a lot of people by seeing them in the gum every day; but now I’d like to connect with you.
I’d like to start sharing stories and tips that can help; whether you’re a fellow gym owner or someone looking to make health a priority.
My first topic is going to be 5 movements to avoid in a gym without having proper guidance:
- Box jumps
I’ve seen, and still see, way too many injuries from these. Remember to start with a small box and progressively increase the box size!
- Kipping pullups
Sorry to all my cross-fitters, but this movement is known to destroy shoulders, especially for beginners.
- Timed High rep cleans or snatches
This is pretty much lower back torture testing. In fact, everyone should avoid doing HEAVY lifts at speed for time. From experience, when training like this your more concentrated on finishing and the competition versus your form. Anything heavy ALWAYS needs proper form!!!
- Agility tires
I know most gyms don’t have these, but agility tires can be very dangerous for beginners. At Nitro, we like to call them the “Ankle Killa”. In 12 years I’ve only had 1 injury from this (you know who you are) 😉
- Unstable surfaces
Anything done on an unstable surface, wobble board or bosu ball is a recipe for disaster. As a beginner, we love to encourage you to try new things. For unstable surfaces, avoid using heavy weights on them to start!
Hope y’all get your workout in today, and make sure to let me know how it went @nitrolifestyle!!
Thank us later,
